Hokies are committed to serve, learn, and lead in communities near and far. The paths look different, but every Virginia Tech student and graduate drops little breadcrumbs throughout their journeys, linking them back to this university.
This blog is a place to hold the stories of the sending out and to tell of the breadcrumbs linking back home. Through the stories of our alumni, our students, and our community, we're going to tell the story of the Virginia Tech experience, in all its diverse, unique, and cohesive beauty.
We invite you to ExperienceVT.
Moving into your residence hall is awesome… the actual lugging of stuff, well, not so much. Fear not, we have Hokie Helpers! Students, faculty, and staff volunteer during move-in to assist the more than 9,000 campus residents. Hokie Helpers’ smiles, muscles, and goodwill set the stage for a stress-free start to college life. And we are still a school true to our colors of maroon and orange, but for move in—look for the blue shirts!
We think you are pretty great already, just because you're a Hokie. At Virginia Tech, we don't talk about our weaknesses. Instead, we focus on our strengths. That's why we are the first university in the nation to offer the CliftonStrengths assessment FREE to all students. Learn about how you work, what you value, and who you are becoming. And don't be surprised if someone asks you about your “top five” once you get to campus!
We know you can’t wait to begin your new life at Virginia Tech. But where to start? There are a number of things you can cross off your to-do list even before you get to campus. Start with the You’re In… Now What checklist. It’s an easy way to keep track of what you’ve done, what you need to do, and what you need to consider before moving to campus.
Whether you are a third-generation Hokie or the first in your family, don’t wait until you are on campus to start college life. Come to Hokie Camp! The Virginia Tech community is rich with tradition, and Hokie Camp will prepare you for what it means to be a part of the Hokie Nation. You’ll make friends, talk about the college experience and how to navigate it successfully, and become part of our unparalleled Hokie Spirit. To learn more and sign up, visit us online today!
You’ll hear that phrase a lot at summer orientation. Have you signed up yet? If not, now is the time. First-Year Orientation offers 13 sessions over a four-week period in July (the weeks of July 10, 17, 24, and 31). Your specific orientation session is based on your academic major, so you may have fewer than 13 session dates from which to choose. Registration is open so don’t delay. It’s time to get your gobble on!
Living on campus is not only convenient, it offers an exceptional opportunity for finding friends and making important connections as you start college life. With more than 40 residence halls, including more than a dozen living-learning communities, we invite you to find a community where you live, learn, laugh, and launch your Virginia Tech experience. Click “Living Here” in the black navigation bar to explore all on-campus housing, as well as other tips and hints for life on campus and in Blacksburg. Welcome home, Hokies!
Are you counting down the days until you arrive at Virginia Tech? We know you are excited to start your Hokie experience, and Orientation is a wonderful program to help you transition to university life. Be sure you’ve created your PID so when Orientation registration opens mid-March you’ll be ready. And if you haven’t already completed your Housing/Dining contract, you can go ahead and mark that off your to-do list. In the meantime, explore opportunities like Hokie Camp and Summer Academy. And, rest assured, lodging in Blacksburg during Orientation isn’t nearly as competitive as during football season!
From the moment you got your acceptance, you’ve been a Hokie, and we couldn’t be more excited to say, “Welcome home.” You’re In…Now What? is your first sneak peek into life at Virginia Tech, so take some time explore this site. It’s a lot of information, but trust us—now that you’re a Hokie, we’re pretty certain you’ll read it with more fervor than you’re reading your textbooks these days.
(Just as a little FYI: we’ll make some minor tweaks to the site and its content in the coming months, so make sure to come back and visit every now and then!)
