Beyond the Classroom
That I May Serve

Embrace Your Awesomeness

We think you are pretty great already, just because you're a Hokie. At Virginia Tech, we don't talk about our weaknesses. Instead, we focus on our strengths. That's why we are the first university in the nation to offer the CliftonStrengths assessment FREE to all students. Learn about how you work, what you value, and who you are becoming. And don't be surprised if someone asks you about your “top five” once you get to campus!

Students Farming

Our motto—Ut Prosim (That I May Serve)—is what Virginia Tech was built around, so we take it seriously. And it means something unique to each person on campus. At VT Engage, the university’s service learning and community engagement center, Ut Prosim means working to inspire active citizens and strengthen communities.

Students serving the community

In the spirit of Ut Prosim, we collaborate with communities, students, and faculty to cultivate and maintain partnerships that benefit people and the world by developing service programs that focus on engaged learning and reflection.

VT Engage encourages students to develop a long-lasting relationship with service and your community. “Ut Prosim” is about developing a long-lasting relationship with service and our community. Our hope is to empower you with the tools and knowledge to become change-making citizens in college and after graduation.

Relay for life

Take a peek into some of our largest community events:

Here are some of the ways you can participate in VT Engage projects:

  • Get on the Bus are half-day or day-long, hands-on projects that introduce participants to social and environmental issues in our region.
  • Recurring trips are a semester-long, weekly commitment to the same community partner that builds a relationship between the students and the organization.
  • The Campus Kitchen at Virginia Tech is a student-run initiative that collects surplus food from dining halls then delivers it to area agencies.
  • STEP UP Leaders are all-star students who help plan, coordinate, and lead all our service trips and reflection opportunities.
  • SERVE Living Learning Community is a residential community for students passionate about service and community engagement.
  • Service immersion trips, held in the U.S. and internationally, are designed to challenge students by exploring service and social issues in-depth.
